Blue Point Double on Monday

Tara Madgwick - Monday July 15

There is no denying Darley shuttler Blue Point (IRE) has made a slower start than expected with his first Australian runners but with three new winners in the past three days the tide appears to be turning.

Blue Point had a debut winner in Perth on Saturday when Lano scored at Belmont (read about him here) and then on Monday the son of Shamardal had a winning double as Blue Stratum and Kirk both saluted as favourite at Pakenham.

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy trained Blue Stratum was second on debut in the Group III VRC Maribyrnong Plate last spring before two more runs in stakes races over the summer for a fourth and a sixth.

Resuming from a spell in maiden class always looked an easy option and he duly took the prize in style scoring by two lengths.

Later in the day Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman got a result from Kirk in the Rosemont Stud colours. Having his third start, he had the benefit of race fitness and experience and cruised home in the 1400m maiden by a couple of lengths.

Blue Stratum and Kirk bring Blue Point to eight Australian first crop winners putting him into equal fourth place on the first season sires table by winners with Alabama Express.

In the Northern Hemisphere where his oldest progeny are three year-olds, Blue Point is making good progress with four stakes-winners among 53 winners since the start of this year and a genuine star performer in top class colt Rosallion, winner of the Group I Royal Ascot St James’s Palace Stakes and Irish 2000 guineas.

Blue Point is back at Darley Victoria this year at a fee of $44,000.

Why Everyone Hates the New Caulfield Mounting Yard
The debate over the controversial new mounting yard at Caulfield Racecourse is certainly heating up. Waller Glamour Mares G1 Winx Stakes Trifecta
Yulong paid 2.7million guineas for top class Group I winning mare Via Sistina (IRE) at the Tattersalls Mares Sale last year and she was worth every penny with the glamour daughter of Fastnet Rock leading home a thrilling trifecta for the stable in the Group I ATC Winx Stakes (1400m) at Randwick when she outpointed established stable stars Zougotcha and Fangirl.

Board Spill at Melbourne Racing Club

Waitak Ready for Return
Wexford Stables may be without their defending champion in Saturday’s Gr.2 Waikato Stud Foxbridge Plate (1200m), but a returning Group One winner in Waitak will be out to retain the title for Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott.
