Reward for Consistency - Wee Nessy Comes Out on Top in Sapphire Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday April 13

The Victorians closed out The Championships at Randwick with a Group II success in the Cincotta Chemist Sapphire Stakes (1200m) with the 4-year-old Snitzel mare Wee Nessy

Ridden Jamie Kah for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, Wee Nessy snapped an eight-run losing streak stretching back to October 22 in defeating the 3-year-old Russian Revolution filly Ballroom Bella by one and a quarter length with the 4-year-old Hellbent mare Miss Hellfire Back a half-length back in third.

The winner of the Listed Crockett Stakes at Moonee Valley at three and placed in seven stakes races, Wee Nessy advances her record to four wins, four seconds, and three thirds from 16 starts with earnings of $696,325.

She is everyone’s dream to ride. She does whatever you want, and she’s talented,” Jamie Kah said.

“She won for me two years ago, I think, at Mornington, and she is always consistent.”

Stable representative Ben Ellam said the Robert Sangster stakes and Doomen 10000 are under consideration.

Wee Nessy put the writing on the wall at her first two starts of this preparation, and we kept her up here the whole time.

“She had the right formlines. Chain Of Lightning won a TJ. She came here in good form and she has really come on with three weeks between runs. Couldn’t have been more confident coming here, really,” Elam said.

“She has really furnished into a proper mare now. We’re not sure what the future holds in terms of breeding or racing on, but there are a few races in store for her.

“There are options. You’ve got a Sangster, which will be quality field this year and you’ve got five weeks until the Doomben 10,000 and she absolutely thrives on wet tracks.

Wee Nessy a $400,000 Magic Millions yearling

“There’s options for us to ponder but the Sangster looks ideal - fillies and mares, 1200.”

Flying Angels/ARJB shelled out $400,000 from Wee Nessy from the Arrowfield Stud draft at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

A sister to the stakes-placegetters Adios and Snapback, Wee Nessy is the best of four winners from five to race from the stakes-placed winner, Later Gator.

A daughter of More Than Ready (USA), Later Gator is a half-sister to Group III-placed Next The Universe (Mossman) from a three-quarter sister to Group III Blue Diamond Preview winner and Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes third World Peace.

From the famed Denise’s Joy family, Later Gator foaled a brother to Wee Nessy last spring and was bred back to Snitzel.
